Work starts next week on moving Enchanted Valley Chalet

August 29th, 2014 - 5:36am

(Port Angeles) An historic chalet threatened by a river in Olympic National Park will start to be moved on Monday.

Monroe House Moving of Carlsborg will begin work to temporarily relocate the Enchanted Valley Chalet. The relocation operation should be finished by mid-September, weather permitting.

Mules reportedly will be used to do the heavy lifting once the chalet is moved. ONP is requiring hikers to be accompanied by ONP staff through the area for the next couple of weeks while the project is underway.

ONP has received a finding of no significant impact that will allow it to move the chalet from its precarious position, as the East Fork Quinault River continues to erode the ground under the base of the cabin.

The cabin will be moved about 1500 feet from its current location so that it is a safe distance from any further erosion. The long-term future of the structure is still uncertain, and the park plans to address that next.
