Olympic National Park bans drones

August 29th, 2014 - 5:37am

(Port Angeles) Unmanned aircraft, or drones, are now prohibited in Olympic National Park.

ONP announced yesterday it would adopt the national parks' policy on the aircraft.

That means launching, landing, or operating an unmanned aircraft from or on lands and waters administered by Olympic National Park is illegal. But there could be exceptions, if approved by the park in writing.

Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum says drones create safety risks to park visitors, as well as impacts to the park experience. Creachbaum says the Wilderness Act of 1964 already prohibits the use of motorized equipment within designated wilderness, which comprises 95 percent of the park.
