Port Angeles set for record tourism year

(Port Angeles) – As the summer season unofficially draws to a close, tourism officials say the Port Angeles area had one of its best tourist seasons ever.
Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce executive director Russ Veenema says lodging establishments in the city limits are poised to have the best room-tax collection ever. Veenema predicts the city will get a record 504-thousand dollars in room tax collections by the end of the year.
Last year was a record year as well.
Through August, lodging occupancy hovered at around 90 percent during the summer months.
Veenema says using economic multipliers, this year's tourism traffic means about 44 million dollars in economic impact from guests staying overnight inside the city limits of Port Angeles.
Veenema says the tourism numbers don't include those who come to the area for day trips or don't stay overnight.
He also says terrific weather and wildfires in other parts of the west helped bring visitors to the area.
