Clallam jail undergoes changes

(Port Angeles) -- The Clallam County sheriff's office has made some significant changes in policies at the county jail.
The changes come after two inmates conspired to have sex in the jail. Also convicted murderer Robert Covarrubias appeared at his sentencing in a jail jumpsuit in which he scrawled "innocent" across the back.
The Sheriff's Office is putting in new jail security measures and procedures for control of the inmate processing, movement, housing and court transportation. The changes have come after nearly a half year of reviews and are in preparation for a new jail expansion approved by the county commissioners.
Among the changes are a new policy for booking inmates, bail schedules and ramping up of electronic home monitoring. The county contracts with the Forks jail to house inmates when the jail tops capacity. The Port Angeles facility has also been cleaned and repaired.
