Local group moving ahead on homelessness issue

November 7th, 2006 - 5:59am

(Port Angeles) -- Homelessness in Clallam County could be cut in half within the next two years, if the state approves a grant request from the County for a 3-point program aimed at providing Housing Resource Centers, Discharge Planning, and permanent supportive housing. Serenity House Executive Director Kathy Wahto presented the document to Clallam County Commissioners this week. Wahto said the state has a pool of about $11-million dollars to dole out to local communities for intitiatives to deal with the homelessness problem. The program doesn't provide for any new construction money though. Wahto says a local intitiative is already underway, so a small part of grant money coming to the county will assist the project.
