City asked for money for new public art project
November 16th, 2006 - 5:39am
(Port Angeles) -- A plan to add more, and different, art in the
downtown Port Angeles area was floated past the
City's Lodging Tax Advisory Committee Wednesday
afternoon. The project, called "Avenue of the People",
was proposed by sculptor Bob Stokes, and would
consist of 20 life-size abstract depictions of people
standing on the sidewalks, on Laurel Street, from
Railroad Avenue to First Street.
The forms would be in welded steel, done by
Lincoln Industrial Welding, and bolted to the new
sidewalks along Laurel next year.
Stokes, and members of the Art on the Town, are
asking the City for roughly $108-thousand dollars
from the Lodging Tax revenues, although Lincoln
Industrial has already pledged $5-thousand of that
price as a start.
Some members of the Tax Advisory Committee thought
it could be a very good project, but questioned
the value back to the City, in the form of more
tourists and their dollars.
The Tax Advisory Committee tabled a vote on the
idea, until Stokes and other members of the Arts
Council and interested parties can come up with a
marketing plan, and perhaps some matching funds
for the project.
