Soggy duck derby nets new record

(Port Angeles) -- A record number of ducks floated down the Nippon Paper mill canal yesterday as part of the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby.
And a Port Angeles man won the top prize in the derby, a new Tundra pickup from Wilder Toyota. David Charles won the truck. He says he has been buying ducks for the race since it began 18 years ago. Sunday was finally his lucky day, he has never won a prize in the derby.
This year's race had a total 35-thousand seven hundred seventy six ducks. That shattered the overall sales record set two years ago.
But torential rains kept a lot of the crowd away from the festivities Sunday afternoon. Most who stuck around listened to the live broadcast on KONP on the car radio's at the race grounds.
Proceeds from the annual fundraiser go to the Olympic Medical Center Foundation and the Sequim Rotary club.
