County approves new septic rules

(Port Angeles) -- Septic system owners in Clallam County will have to have those systems inspected.
The county will also have to inventory all systems in the county.
Those are part of the rules county commissioners adopted yesterday.
Under the local plan, gravity fed septic systems must be inspected every three years. More advanced systems will have to be checked every year.
The county hopes to set up a training session for local owners to learn how to inspect their own systems.
The county may also tack on a 10 to 20 dollar fee to pay for the program.
The new regulations were crafted by a group of environmental health officials and septic system installers.
The county had to come up with the plan to comply with new state regulations cover on-site sewage systems in areas surrounding the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound.
