KONP announcer marks water skiing anniversary

July 31st, 2007 - 6:42am

(Port Angeles) -- It was fifty years ago today, one of KONP's own water skied across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Dick Goodman was 24 at the time and strapped on a single ski to make the journey from Port Angeles to Victoria. It took Goodman a bit longer than hoped for partly because his tow boat went the wrong way toward Race Rocks not the Victoria Harbor. Goodman says they got the boat in the right direction and he cruised into the harbor after 55 minutes on the water. Goodman had attempted to make the crossing on July 30, 1957 complete with a live radio broadcast, but that attempt was scuttled. He decided to head out the next day with a lot less fanfare. Goodman was presented with a small trophy for accomplishing what was believed the first time someone attempted to cross the Strait on one ski.
