Local real estate market still fine

February 12th, 2008 - 6:21am

(Port Angeles) -- It's still a good time to buy a home in the Port Angeles area, even though the national real estate story might be different. A panel of loan officers, realtors and home builders told the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce yesterday, the market locally is stronger than in most other parts of the country. Coldwell Banker Realtor Brooke Nelson says despite some negativity over problems facing homeowners, this is still a good time to buy a home since inventory is open now in all price ranges. The panel agreed bad news in the media might be artifically driving a lot of the problems. Nelson says statistics show home prices continuing to double in Clallam County every seven to ten years. Meantime, North Peninsula Home Builders president Kevin Russell warned the group of proposed legislation that could spell real problems for home building. Russell says Senate bill 6385 would add another layer of lawsuits against builders. Russell say in effect the bill allows lawsuits anyone who works on a new home, from general contracts down to the manufacturer of the applicances. He says if the bill passes, "Habitat for Humanity" would have to fold because of the liability for its volunteers. Russell says contractors across the state are trying to defeat the bill.
