Local mills still struggle

February 28th, 2008 - 6:29am

(Port Angeles) -- The struggles continue for local mills. KPLY remains shutdown, but reportedly has a backlog of orders waiting once finances can be arranged. But the area's other mills are facing a set of different problems, bad markets and a lack of raw materials. North Olympic Timber Action Committee director Carol Johnson says she hopes it's a temporary problem. Johnson says the availability of more timber for market this year will depend on market prices, and every timber owner has different markets for their wood. But Johnson says the possibility of more federally-owned timberlands opening up to meet any deman is small. She says Olympic National Forest was not included in a matrix of lands being made available for harvest. She says instead it is being left as a "wilderness area". Johnson says she thinks unrealistic environmental policy is controlling timberlands available for harvest.
