Cooperative aims to promote local biomass energy

March 27th, 2008 - 5:35am

(Port Angeles) -- There's a new partnership looking to implement a Biomass Energy Outreach project in Clallam County. Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development -- also known as Northwest SEED -- and their partners will provide training and technical assistance on utilizing wood waste to meet energy needs and enhance the local economy. Project Manager Leslie Moynihan tells us the Biomass Energy Outreach project will build on the opportunities explored by many groups in Clallam County, including Clallam netWorks Economic Development Council, the University of Washington's Olympic Natural Resources Center and Washington State University. The project will examine biomass technologies, their economic feasibility, and the needs to move project development forward. Northwest SEED and their partners will bring together leaders in the forestry, tribal, environmental, and business communities. Tools will be provided to connect community members with their resources, technology and financing options, ownership models, and implementation strategies. Focus will be given to technologies with environmental benefits and added market value for a broad range of community members. The goal of the outreach project is to move project concepts forward with community acceptance and business plan development. Workshops will be conducted in Clallam County in two parts beginning this summer and fall. Details on the workshops will be available at www.nwseed.org or by contacting Leslie Moynihan at 206-267-2215. Founded in 2001, Northwest SEED works to establish a clean, diverse, and affordable Northwest energy system based on the efficient use of renewable resources. Northwest SEED is getting funding support from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
