(Port Angeles) -- Scholarships will allow more than 2-thousand
students to be introduced to Olympic National Park by partner
Olympic Park Institute.
A Centennial Challenge grant from the National Park System
and matching funds from private donors was awarded this week.
Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Sue McGill says
it's an opportunity to continue building on the foundation of the park's 20-year partnership with Olympic Park Institute.
She says O-P-I is a leader in field science and the Centennial Initiative will allow them to work with a broad diversity of students.
The National Park Centennial Initiative is a 10-year program to reinvigorate America's national parks and prepare them for a second century.
The initiative includes a focus on increased funding for park
operations plus a President's Challenge: up to 100-million dollars a year in federal funds to match 100-million a year in philanthropic donations to the National Park Service.
The Centennial Initiative grant awarded to Olympic Park Institute is part of a larger package to support the work of Yosemite National Institutes (YNI).
Olympic Park Institute will receive approximately 140-thousand
dollars to provide scholarships to 2-thousand students from underserved populations.
Founded in 1987, Olympic Park Institute's mission is to teach
science and environmental education in nature's classroom to inspire a personal connection to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it.
Located on Lake Crescent's shore, Olympic Park Institute offers field science education for school groups, conference facilities and adult education programs.
