Cyclists like PA bike and walking route plan

May 7th, 2008 - 6:25am

(Port Angeles) -- A thumbs up from some avid bicyclists on proposed amendments to the city's bicycle and school walking routes.

The Port Angeles City Council held a public hearing last night and a first reading of amendments to the city's comprehensive plan and land use map.

Previously, city staff met with representatives of the School District, Clallam Transit and the Alternative Transportation Advocacy Group of Port Angeles to determine school walking routes, non-motorized transportation routes and transit related issues.

Randall McCoy was one of the citizens testifying at last night's public hearing. McCoy says with bike lanes, more children would be encouraged to walk and bike to school if their parent knew they had a place to travel, especially where no sidewalks currently exists. He adds adult would consider it a viable alternative as well.

Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Russ Veenema is also an avid cyclist. He says the chamber is having a great deal of success right now in marketing the cycling product in the area, primarily due to the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Another cycling enthusiast told the council there is not enough space between motor vehicles and non-motorized traffic on Port Angeles streets.

The Council continued the matter until their May 20th meeting.
