PenCom dispatching for City of Forks

May 8th, 2008 - 7:23am

(Port Angeles) -- The local 9-1-1 center PenCom in Port Angeles will be temporarily handling the dispatching services for the City of Forks.

The City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Forks, providing the emergency dispatching through PenCom until July 29th at a rate of 833 dollars per month.

Port Angeles Police Chief Terry Gallagher explained the dilemma to the City Council this week.

The situation began in January when the City of Forks suffered a severe staffing issue and was not able to adequate staff their communications center.

Initially, Forks Police Chief Mike Powell asked PenCom to provide dispatching from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. seven days a week beginning January 29th.

Beginning February 18th, PenCom began dispatching for the City of Forks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Due to the urgency of the request, PenCom began providing the service before an Interlocal agreement could be drafted.

There is no additional cost to the City of Port Angeles for personnel or equipment to provide the service to Forks.
