May 9th, 2008 - 6:49am

(Port Angeles) -- After an absence of around 20 years, Olympic Peninsula area law enforcement leaders have come together to reinitiate the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

It's an annual event conducted in support of the Washington State Special Olympics.

The Olympic Peninsula leg of the Torch Run is set for Wednesday, May 28th.

Runners from numerous agencies connected with the criminal justice system are set to participate including the Clallam and Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies and the support and corrections personnel.

Other participants include the Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Townsend Police Departments, the Clallam Bay Corrections Center, Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies, the US Coast Guard and Washington State Patrol.

The run will begin early on the morning of the 28th.

Officers will carry the torch from the area of Lairds Corner, into downtown Port Angeles, then east along the Olympic Discovery trail.

The run continues eastward to Sequim and into Blyn area. A short break will take place near Seven Cedar Casino for photo opportunities before embarking on the second half of the run.

Jefferson County will assume the run from the Discovery Bay area, to the east side of the Hood Canal Bridge where the torch will be handed off to Kitsap County agencies to take it to Tacoma and on the Fort Lewis, where the games will be held beginning May 30th.

Anyone wishing to donate to Special Olympics of Washington and support the officers' efforts can stop by the Clallam County Sheriff's Department or the Sequim Police Department.

Donations can include bottled water for the runners.

On the day of the opening ceremonies, a representative of Olympic Peninsula Law enforcement will take a cashiers check of the collected funds to the Special Olympics of Washington Committee at Fort Lewis.
