County tries to fix lower Dungeness flooding problem

May 16th, 2008 - 8:26am

(Port Angeles) -- Clallam County will spend just under two million dollars to bring the lower Dungeness River back to a natural state. The money will be used to relocate dikes. Engineers say that will help recover the traditional flood plain at the end of the river. The county will also use the funds to buy property that will be affected by the change. The area is prone to bad flooding during high water. Most of the one-point-eight million dollars comes from the state's Recreation and Conservation Office and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board. The county will have to chip in about 317-thousand dollars toward the projects. County commissioner Steve Tharinger owns property in the affected area. He recused himself from this week's vote on the project.
