State DOT official talks to Port Angeles audience

May 20th, 2008 - 8:13am

(Port Angeles) -- Washington State's Transportation chief says the system is fragile, with soaring fuel prices and aging infrastructure. And Transportation secretary Paula Hammond says her department may need more money. She told the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce, rising costs for materials and fuel are making it nearly impossible to continue running the department and continuing to improve ferries, bridges and highways. Hammond says most of the crunch is coming from fuel prices especially with the ferry system. She also talked about the 6-week closure next year of the Hood Canal Floating bridge, and said they are still looking into adding a ferry run between Port Townsend and Edmond during the closure. She also says the state also has 35-hundred bridges with many in bad shape. And the department may move to chip sealing some roads instead of repairing them with new asphalt in an attempt to extend the life of roadways.
