Local cops to run torch for Special Olympics

May 27th, 2008 - 5:55am

(Port Angeles) -- Local law enforcement members will take to the streets tomorrow. But they won't be patrolling, they'll be running. They're coming together to take the Special Olympics of Washington Torch from Clallam County to its ultimate goal of Fort Lewis. The run begins about 7:30 Wednesday morning with the Olympic National Park starting the run off from Laird's Corner. The torch will be handed off to officers of the Port Angeles Police Department who will carry the torch down the truck route, into downtown and onto the Olympic Discovery Trail. From there, members of the US Coast Guard will assist Clallam County Deputies in carrying the torch to Railroad Trestle Park near Sequim. It is expected the runners will arrive there about noon. A short break will be taken there before Sequim Officers continue the run through the city. After the Sequim leg, area law enforcement is receiving assistance from Clallam Bay Prison Officers for an eastward leg through to the east county line. Finally, the US Coast Guard and other agencies will assist Jefferson County Agencies in finishing the run to the Hood Canal Bridge where Kitsap County officials will take the torch on to the Tacoma area. The run benefits the athletes for the Special Olympics of Washington that happen May 31st at Fort Lewis.
