Port to sell property for boat racing

(Port Angeles) -- The Port of Port Angeles is moving ahead with selling land near Fairchild Airport to be turned into a boat racing track.
Yesterday, port commissioners unanimously approved accepting a purchase and sale agreement for 113 acres commonly known as the Critchfield property.
A group of local investors says it will pay one million fifty thousand dollars for the property to create a sprint-boat racing track.
Neighbors of the property say they support the concept.
But concerns were also raised to the port commissioner that the land should be kept as a buffer to the airport. It was also suggested the city and port could swap the acreage for part of Lincoln Park where growing trees have hindered the approach to the airport.
Port executive director Bob McChesney says yesterday's action is only the first step in the process of selling the land.
The port and buyers now have 45 days to mull over the deal. After that, the port will conduct another public hearing to remove the property from the agency's comprehensive plan and declare it surplus.
It would be the second time in the past few years the property has been surplused. It was declared surplus in 2004 when the property was considered as the spot for a new hardwood mill.
