Man ejected from vehicle on Deer Park Rd
July 4th, 2008 - 10:22pm
(Port Angeles) -- Serious injuries for a Neah Bay man after his car crashed Thursday night on
Deer Park Road.
Clallam County Sheriff's Sergeant Nick Turner says 23-year-old Jonathan Heilman
failed to negotiate a curve about 7 and a half miles up Deer Park Road and drove off the roadway.
The vehicle collided into an embankment and trees, but it was not seriously damaged.
Reports say Heilman, the lone occupant, was not wearing a seatbelt.
He was ejected from the vehicle through the windshield and collided into trees.
Officials say he sustained various injuries and was found by a passing motorist who assisted him
and summoned aid.
Heilman was transported to the Olympic Medical Center by Clallam County Fire District #3 where
he was stabilized for airlift to the trauma unit at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene, summoned a Technical Collision Specialist
from the Sheriff’s Dept., and determined that speed and intoxicants were factors in the collision.
Authorities say they will file a report with the Clallam County Prosecutor’s Office recommending
charges be filed against Heilman for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Driving with a Suspended
Driver’s License and for operating a vehicle without an integrated ignition interlock device as Heilman is
mandated by law.
An ignition interlock device requires an alcohol-free breath sample before it will allow a vehicle to start.
It requires more alcohol-free breath samples at certain time intervals while driving, otherwise it will
disable the engine.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Dept. emphatically recommends that everyone drive sober, observe the
posted speed limits, and use the seat belts in their vehicles.
Serious injuries caused by ejection from a moving vehicle can be prevented by seat belt use.
