Governor makes campaign stops in Port Angeles, Sequim

July 22nd, 2008 - 5:49am

(Port Angeles) -- Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire visited Port Angeles and Sequim yesterday.

She touched on many issues, mainly touting efforts to diversify the state's economy and create more so-called "green" jobs in environmentally friendly sectors. She talked about a recent visit to Washington from China's president.

"He said: 'I understand you are beginning to make biofuels. I'd like to import everything you can produce,'" related Gregoire. "At that time we hadn't produced anything so I said I'd put him on the list."

Gregoire also says the Rayonier property on the Port Angeles waterfront is high on her list. Gregoire says the site needs to be cleaned up soon.

"There is a wonderful opportunity for us to partner with the tribe, port and local economic development entrepreneur here to get some new opportunities that will be spectacular," said Gregoire.

Gregoire also spent time underscoring what she sees as the importance of the tourism industry in Washington State. She says it's a good way to bring in outside dollars, grow local economies and not rely on heavy industry that might harm the environment.
