PA Council accepts Madsen resignation

July 22nd, 2008 - 6:43pm

(Port Angeles) -- The Port Angeles City Council has accepted the resignation of City Manager Mark Madsen effective September 1st.

The matter passed on a 5-2 vote at a 24-minute special council session Tuesday afternoon at City Hall.

Mayor Gary Braun, Deputy Mayor Betsy Wharton and Council members Cherie Kidd, Dan DiGuilio and Don Perry cast yes votes to accept Madsen's resignation.

Council members Larry Williams and Karen Rogers voted no.

The council plans to contract with a qualified interim City Manager as soon as possible and will begin a search for a new, full-time manager in a timely manner.

Last week, a council subcommittee consisting of Wharton, Williams and DiGuilio drafted a letter as a statement to the public that was read at Tuesday's meeting by Williams.

The letter touched on the vague allegations of criminal conduct by one or more un-named council members. The council voted unanimously to accept the document.

Meantime, another letter from Madsen made public yesterday says an investigation revealed no criminal doings by any council member, instead referring to some "intrusions" into police investigations, but not to the extent of violating criminal law.

Madsen also wrote his original memos were meant primarily for city council eyes and ears, and were not intended to provoke a public outcry, referring to what he termed tabloid-like headlines in the media.
