Plans continuing for memorial to slain Forest Service officer

September 25th, 2008 - 6:03am

(Port Angeles) -- Thousands of law enforcement, emergency response, government officials and the public are expected at services for a slain local Forest Service officer.

Kristine Fairbanks was killed during a traffic stop near Sequim on Saturday.

Her services will take place Monday afternoon at one at Civic Field in Port Angeles.

More than 250 agency Honor Guards from across the state and northwest are expected to participate in the ceremonies.

Area law enforcement officers are maintaining a 24-hour vigil at the Harper Ridgeview Funeral Home. The vigil will continue through Monday.

Olympic National Forest has established a phone information center at the Clallam County courthouse to handle the outpouring of sympathy calls and questions. The phone is staffed from 8 am to 6 pm at 565-2680.

Olympic National Forest Supervisor Dale Hom says a Kristine Fairbanks Memorial Fund has been established at First Federal Savings and Loan. Donations will be accepted at any First Federal location.

He is also asking sympathy cards for the Fairbanks family to be mailed in care of Olympic National Forest's offices at 437 Tillicum Lane in Forks.

While plans for Monday's services continue, critical incident stress management teams are working throughout the Olympic National Forest and surrounding areas to provide support to friends and coworkers of Fairbanks.

A community meeting was held in Fairbanks' home town of Forks last night to help that community deal with the tragedy.
