Park Service seeks more input on water treatment plant

October 15th, 2008 - 5:54am

(Port Angeles) -- Public input is being sought on a proposal to improve the Nippon Paper Industries Water Treatment Plant.

The plan would protect the mill's water supply during and after removal of the two Elwha River dams.

The N-P-I paper mill at Ediz Hook in Port Angeles is currently the sole user of the Elwha River industrial water supply line.

A number of water quality protection facilities are currently under construction or are scheduled for construction and will protect the supply during and after dam removal.

The proposed improvement project will protect the water supply for the N-P-I paper-making process that requires particularly clear water from its own treatment plant.

A 12-hundred foot extension is proposed to a 20-inch outfall pipe that discharges the sediments into the Strait of Juan de Fuca after they are removed by the water treatment plant.

Sediment levels will increase during and after dam removal, and more of it will be released into the Strait.

In order to insure proper mixing and dispersion, the sediments must be released at a 30-foot depth, necessitating the outfall pipe to be extended further into the Strait.

The National Park Service is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) that will evaluate the environmental effects of this proposal. Interested members of the public are invited to provide input on the proposed projects.

Comments received during this initial scoping period will be used to help define the issues and concerns to be addressed in the E-A.

Comments can be submitted on-line by visiting the website for the National Park Service's Planning Environment and Public Comment system -- parkplanning.nps.gov.
