City agrees to keep pool open, for now

November 19th, 2008 - 5:58am

(Port Angeles) -- The William Shore Memorial Swimming pool may remain open, after all.

During a marathon Port Angeles city council meeting last night, the Save Our Pool Committee, presented a scenario of how the pool could be saved.

The city council countered with another proposal that would keep the pool open until April under city funding.

The pool costs $400-thousand dollars a year to operate. The Save our Pool Committee suggested a two-pronged attack.

First: They would raise the money necessary for the next few months of operation, donating it directly to city coffers, and earmarked solely for the pool.

Secondly: The city and Clallam County would form a Metropolitan Parks District to raise taxes for pool operation. Voters would have to approve forming that district.

After a lot of discussion, city councilmember Don Perry proposed three measures. Number one: The council would fund the pool for the first quarter of 2009. Number two: The city would accept donations from citizens for pool operation. And number three: City staff to work with county staff to prepare a ballot measure to the voters to form a parks district that would operate the pool for a period of time to be determined. Also to be determined would be the boundaries of the district, but probably including the Port Angeles and Crescent School districts.

The measure would be put before voters as soon as possible next year.

Councilmember Karen Rogers warned however, that the city would need to know the cost of the election, and if Clallam County would help defray that cost. Also, they would need to know that no later than December 2nd. The council unanimously approved all three of Perry's resolutions.
