City condemns historic PA motel

June 27th, 2009 - 7:49am

(Port Angeles) -- The city of Port Angeles has condemned the Chinook Motel.

Friday, city officials posted signs on the 50-year-old building calling it unfit for human habitation.

The move came about a week after an inspection of the building located at First and Ennis Streets.

The city plans to continue an investigation of the building, but says it has found extensive damage throughout the building. It also found safety hazards that included rodent droppings as well as problems with the heating and ventilation systems.

The state health department also plans to pull the motel's license.

The Chinook was once a landmark motel in Port Angeles, considered a prime place to stay.

In the past two decades it has fallen into disrepair. The property has been on the market. Sources who wish to remain anonymous tell Newsradio 1450 KONP an all-cash offer for less than the asking price made recently was rebuffed by the owners.

The owners have sought a million dollars for the aged motel and the property on which it sits.
