Red Flag warning up for dangerous fire conditions
July 3rd, 2009 - 6:29am
(Port Angeles) -- The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for our area.
The rare fire warning comes as a string of warmer and drier than normal air has bumped the wildfire danger up substantially. The warning will cover from noon today through midnight on Sunday.
The dry weather has already touched off more than half a dozen wildland fires around the north Olympic Peninsula.
Yesterday Fire District Three and state Department of Natural Resources units used more than 3600 gallons of water to knock down a small wildfire south of Sequim.
The fire was about 75 by 75 feet in size burning along Johnson Creek Road.
Fire district three Lt. Bob Rhoads says due to the heavy fire load, steep terrain and extensive fuel, the fire was difficult to extinguish.
