Stand off ends west of Port Angeles

(Port Angeles) -- A 22-hour stand off with police ended peacefully yesterday afternoon.
41-year-old Peter Stephan the Third came out of his house on Ranger Road at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon.
He had holed up in the house since late Wednesday afternoon.
Because the incident occurred on Lower Elwha Klallam reservation land, the FBI was called in as the lead agency.
The FBI used a SWAT team that fired tear gas into the house, prompting Stephan to come from the house.
The standoff started after Lower Elwha tribal police were called to the house to look into a domestic violence report.
Police say Stephan apparently fired shots from a pistol into some trees on the property in an attempt to keep officers from approaching the house.
An FBI spokesperson says the negotiations were hampered because the house didn't have a phone line in it. Agents has to use a loudspeaker to try to communicate with Stephan.
Stephan was booked into the Clallam County jail last night and will be arraigned in federal court in Tacoma next week.
