(Port Angeles) -- Port of Port Angeles Commissioners discussed the idea of lodging a protest over the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's awarding of NOAA's new
base of operations to Newport, Oregon.
NOAA plans to leave it's long-time base in Seattle, next year, and Port Angeles was one of the cities vying for the base, along with Bellingham, Seattle and Newport.
The port has 10 days to file a protest after the announcement was made.
Commissioner Jim McEntire recommended at least sending the letter to the General Services Administration about the decision.
Port board president John Calhoun said a full appeal would cost $75-thousand dollars, with a slim chance of success, but agreed that a letter should be sent.
A meeting in the next day or two between the port, city and Clallam County should decide the wording of the letter.

In other action, Airport Manager Jeff Robb said a Small Community Air Service Development Grant will be submitted this week, as a joint effort between Port Angeles and Sequim, to keep air service with Kenmore Airlines a viable operation.
Washington Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, plus Congressman Norm Dicks are supporting the grant request.
And plans continue between Kenmore and Alaska Airlines to provide one-step airline service between the companies.
By the end of the year, one ticket will provide air service for Alaska Air passengers who wish to continue on the Port Angeles via Kenmore Airlines and vice versa.
