PA council candidate's mother, son killed in car crash

October 18th, 2009 - 4:30pm

(Port Angeles) -- The mother and son of a Port Angeles city council candidate were killed in a traffic collision west of Port Angeles.

Candidate Brooke Nelson's six-year-old son Theodin S. Nelson and 60 year-old mother Mary Emma Wyman of Port Angeles were pronounced dead at the scene of the two car crash near Power Plant Road on Highway 112 Sunday about 1:45 pm.

According to the State Patrol, Wyman's green 1997 Subaru Legacy was traveling eastbound when the car veered off the roadway to the right before coming back onto the roadway and crossing into the westbound lane. The Subaru was struck on the driver's side by a red 1990 Toyota Camry occupied by a young couple from Vancouver, Washington.

24-year-old Joshua M. Dickens and his wife 22 year-old Emily M. Dickens were both transported to Olympic Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Emily's condition was changed to critical and she underwent surgery at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Theodin is also the son of Darrell Nelson, a Sequim Police Officer married to Brooke Nelson.

Troopers say Wyman was wearing a seatbelt and Theodin was properly restrained in a booster seat.

The highway was closed to traffic with detours in place while troopers investigated.

The roadway was re-opened at 5:00 pm.
