Pen Ply closer to full production after final loan

(Port Angeles) -- A Port Angeles plywood mill is almost ready to begin full operations.
Peninsula Plywood last week secured the last part of the financing it needs to get the former KPly mill fully operating.
Peninsula Plywood president Josh Renshaw says a Washington State Department of Commerce loan gained approval. That allowed two other private loans to kick in.
Work started last fall to repair the machinery in the mill. The mill has already hired 52 workers through last month. Renshaw says he told another 75 workers Friday they will be brought on board as well. The mill expects to have 175 workers before the end of the year.
He also pointed to a Economic Development Council study that says the mill's reopening would create 405 total jobs in the area and pump $17 million dollars into the local economy.
The plant has been idle since February 2008, when 134 workers were permanently laid off.
The mill expects to produce 32 million surface feet of plywood this year with operations starting in the next few weeks.
