Halibut season and derby set for May

(Port Angeles) -- Port Angeles Salmon Club directors heard good news at their monthly meeting Thursday night in the form of a halibut season for Sekiu, Port Angeles and Port Townsend.

The 10th Port Angeles Halibut Derby will be May 29-30 over the Memorial Day weekend as it has been for the past nine years, but directors had to wait for the final halibut catch seasons to be confirmed Wednesday.

Area 5, which is the Sekiu area, will have a Thursday, Friday, Saturday fishing season June 3-19th.

Area 6, Port Angeles, will fish Thursday, Friday and Saturdays May 6-30th and Area 9, the Port Townsend area, will also have a shortened season.

The entire quota for the three areas is 50,000 pounds of halibut.

The Port Angeles Salmon Club offers $20,000 in cash prizes for largest halibut caught during the two-day derby, with $5,000 for first prize and 30 prizes in all.

Halibut Derby tickets are $40 for one day or two days and are on sale now at Swain's General Store in Port Angeles and at Swains.com online.
