PUD to send CFL bulbs to customers

(Port Angeles) -- Clallam County P-U-D's customers this week will begin receiving in the mail packages containing five Energy Star approved Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs.
Using the services of an outside contractor, the utility is sending the packages to each residential account holder's physical mailing address.
Approximately 140-thousand of the highly energy efficient bulbs are being distributed at no charge to customers.
P-U-D Power Supply and Utility Services Manager Fred Mitchell says once all of these bulbs are put to use, it will reduce customers' electricity usage by enough to power approximately 250 Clallam County homes.
Mitchell says increased energy efficiency and conservation is a long-established practice at the P-U-D.
Recent voter-requested changes in state policy require the P-U-D to approximately double its annual goals for energy conservation over the next two years.
Mitchell says the C-F-L program is the most efficient and cost-effective way to meet this ambitious goal.
Mitchell adds the result will be considerable energy and financial savings for both our customers and the PUD.
A C-F-L bulb uses approximately one-fourth of the electricity as an incandescent bulb while providing the same amount of light.
Because C-F-Ls last eight to 10 times longer, lower replacement costs alone save customers about 30 dollars over the life of the C-F-L bulb.
The P-U-D is sending each customer two 13-watt and three 20-watt CFLs.
Each package includes an educational insert that explains the best uses for the bulbs, the progress that has occurred in C-F-L technology, and information about proper disposal.
Because C-F-L bulbs use a minute portion of mercury, proper disposal is recommended.
In the event a customer finds anything wrong with the box's contents, they are encouraged to call the distributor, AutoCell Electronics, directly.
