City may publicly honor local veterans

March 5th, 2010 - 2:28am

(Port Angeles) -- Drivers on Lincoln Street may soon see banners on street light poles, honoring local men and women serving our country.

The city council received a recommendation from the Port Angeles Forward Committee, requesting them to approve the Blue Star Banner Program, as proposed by Wave Broadband. Last December, Wave Broadband's Mike Sturgeon presented the program to PA Forward, who then forwarded a recommendation to the city council to approve the project for the Lincoln Street corridor.

The banners would be placed on light poles between 3rd Street and Lauridsen Boulevard. They would be tall and narrow, mesuring 5 by 2 feet, and would feature a large blue star and the name and rank of a serviceman or woman below the start. The banners would be of a weather-resistant material, and would be serviced and kept clean by Wave Broadband.

A 2nd reading of the proposal is slated for the next meeting, and the council is expected to pass the proposal.
