Land conservation groups to merge

(Port Angeles) -- Two local land conservation groups are merging into one.

The North Olympic Land Trust and Friends of the Fields are in the final stages of a the merger that would create a single entity. It could be made final with a vote of the land trust's board tomorrow.

Leaders from both groups say the merger makes sense since both have worked together for many years. They also say it will help the organization stay afloat financially.

Under the proposal, a new committee dealing exclusively with acquiring and preserving farm land would be formed under the Land Trust.

Land trust executive director Greg Good says he expects the organization will hire a farmland conservation specialist.
