State legislature heads into extra innings
March 12th, 2010 - 2:09am
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The Legislature's 60-day session has
officially ended, but lawmakers won't be going far.
The House and Senate both adjourned at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday,
but they'll need to return to the Capitol to solve the state's $2.8
billion budget deficit.
House and Senate Democrats have yet to agree on how to balance
the budget, and Gov. Chris Gregoire has been meeting with
legislative leaders throughout the day. She hasn't yet issued a
proclamation calling for a special session, but is expected to
soon.
Gregoire said she needs to see that the House and Senate have
reached an agreement on three things before she'll call a special
session: The size of the budget, the amount of revenue needed for
that budget, and the amount they'll have left over for savings.
