Rayonier delivers "key" piece for mill property clean up

July 23rd, 2010 - 6:01am

(Port Angeles) -- State officials say they've received a key part of a clean up plan for the Rayonier mill site.

Rayonier this week delivered to the state Department of Ecology a work plan for the upland property at the Port Angeles site.

The plan details where groundwater, shoreline seep and soil samples will be taken.

Ecology's Rebecca Lawson says once sampling is done and results verified, her agency will know how deep contamination goes and how widespread different toxic materials are across the property.

Lawson characterized the document as a "huge step" in the long process to design actual cleanup in the upland and marine areas of the mill site.

Rayonier plans to start sampling at the site next month, with another round set for this fall.
