Business leaders talk about slow growth for Port Angeles

July 27th, 2010 - 5:54am

(Port Angeles) -- A lack of jobs and problems with government are big reasons people don't want to move to Port Angeles.

That's what a panel of long-time business people told the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce yesterday.

It was the final in a series of speakers at the chamber on the question of growth or no growth in Port Angeles.

Realtor Alan Barnard told the chamber his survey of local realtors says their clients aren't coming here because of a lack of jobs and what jobs are here, don't pay well enough.

Another Realtor, Dan Gase, said he feels the community needs to promote itself better, become more friendly to customers and consumers, and perhaps build a better retirement community. He noted the region is more of a retirement center than a working community and the number of new residents isn't quite equaling the number of people dying. The 3rd panel member, builder Bill Feeley, said he talked to about 150 people, asking why is this city not growing.

Feeley feels it's a question of permitting and red tape that's the problem. He says burdensome regulation is choking growth.

At a Chamber meeting in mid-August, Chamber officials hope to present a recap of the last three meetings, and see if a solution is possible.
