City budget shortfall not as big

(Port Angeles) -- The red ink for the city of Port Angeles may not be quite as deep as first thought.
During a budget presentation this week, city finance director Yvonne Zimkowski told the city council the budget deficit for next year is pegged at about 690-thousand dollars.
That's less than a one-point-one million dollar deficit predicted earlier this year.
But Zimkowski told the council, the city still will have to find ways to cut the budget in order to balance it.
The city will use the results of a citizen survey to help direct what services could be trimmed.
That survey indicated some services including some parks and recreation programs, ranked low as essential services the city should provide.
The city hopes to make up the budget shortfall through cuts and not rely on reserves or fee increases.
