Authorities issue consumer alerts in Clallam County

September 3rd, 2010 - 6:08am

(Port Angeles) -- A number of scams are operating in Clallam County.

One is a telemarketing ploy in which residents are being contacted by phone by a company calling itself "Gold Rush".

The company may indicated it received contact information through the Clallam PUD and then says because of the customer's excellent credit, they have won a new car. The catch, the customer must pay the tax on the vehicle. It's a scam.

PUD general manager Doug Nass says the PUD does not share customer information with any entity and has nothing to do with a company called Gold Rush.

Another scam involves paving. The Clallam County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to watch out for out-of-county paving businesses.

Often they will approach homeowners and businesses, offering low prices. They're often targeting senior citizens, telling them they just finished a paving job nearby and have left-over materials.

Sheriff's officials say the asphalt starts to deteriorate shortly after they complete the job and leave the area. They urge residents to check the company's references and beware of great bargains. You can also check with the state Department of Labor and Industries to see if a contractor is licensed and bonded.
