County may furlough employees to make budget

(Port Angels) -- The Clallam County courthouse could be closed two days a month next year.
That's if county commissioners approve recommendations outlined in the preliminary budget.
County administrator Jim Jones is proposing two unpaid furlough days a month for county employees next year. It's one way the county is looking to fill a two-point-seven million dollar shortfall in next year's budget.
Jones says even with the furlough days, the county will still have to come up with more money to fill the budget hole.
Jones says the county would need to dip into reserves for about 940-thousand dollars to balance the budget.
In his preliminary budget message, Jones says a steep decline in interest dividends and required payments to the state retirement fund are driving the budget shortfall.
