Survey shows high sexual misconduct at Clallam jail

September 9th, 2010 - 6:06am

(Port Angeles) -- A study of sexual misconduct cases ranks Clallam County's jail as one of the highest.

The results come from a federal survey of 286 jails across the country. It shows the Clallam jail with the third highest inmate-reported sexual misconduct by jail staff.

75 out of 132 inmates responded to the anonymous survey between 2008 and 2009. Just over six percent said they were sexually victimized by staff.

Clallam County jail superintendent Ron Sukert tells our media partner, the Sequim Gazette, the reports were not verified by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The bureau conducted the survey, but didn't offer follow up questioning.

Sukert says the last incident of sexual misconduct in the jail was found to be unsubstantiated and he knew of only one allegation of staff sexual misconduct in the last 15 years.

He says facts he was able to put together don't support the findings in the federal study.

Meantime, Clallam County sheriff Bill Benedict has asked the FBI to investigate the allegations.
