Forecasters: Prepare for tougher winter weather this year

(Port Angeles) -- Don't expect a mild winter this year.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Seattle, say they're expecting this winter to be much harsher than last year.
Meteorologist Ted Buehner says El Nino is long gone and and La Nina pattern is moving in.
"That's when the ocean water surface temperatures in the central Pacific are much cooler than normal," said Beuhner. "That changes the way the jetstream steers storms into the northwest"
Buehner told KONP's "Todd Ortloff Show", previous La Nina years have brought some tough weather for parts of the north Olympic Peninsula.
"Looking back we had terrible flooding in the last big La Nina year of 2007-2008. The next year was a weaker La Nina and we had the Snowmedagon in lowland western Washington and high winds in parts of the north Olympic Peninsula," said Beuhner.
Buehner says residents should use the next few weeks to make sure they are prepared for a harder winter.
