Sequim school building closure will displace non-profit groups

January 27th, 2012 - 6:32am

(Sequim) -- Most of Sequim's Community School will be shut down this year.

The Sequim School Board this week agreed with the district's facilities committee that about 80 percent of the aging building should be mothballed.

The move will displace about a half dozen number of non-profit, social service and education agencies that had been using space in the building. No new space was found at district facilities for those programs.

But the school district will move most of its programs that were in the building to new spaces. By this fall, the only program operating out of the community school building will be the Olympic Peninsula Academy.

The plan also calls for modifications to part of the building as well as a reception area at the auditorium. Overall, district officials say the move will save about 75-thousand dollars a year.
