Blasting used to take down Glines Canyon dam

January 27th, 2012 - 6:33am

(Port Angeles) -- Crews are using explosives now to help take down the upper dam on the Elwha River.

Earlier this week, a blast was used to remove about six vertical feet from the top of the Glines Canyon dam's eastern side.

Olympic National Park officials say with just over 40 vertical feet of Glines Canyon Dam now removed, the reservoir level has dropped considerably, making the eastern side of the dam harder for a barge and excavator to reach. That's why contractors plan to do more blasting on that section to take down more of the dam.

Downstream at the Elwha Dam, crews are preparing to take out the last remnants of the powerhouse and demolish the 'training wall' that forms the east side western channel. Eventually crews will shift the river into that channel.
