New utility charge coming for Port Angeles

October 4th, 2012 - 6:22am

(Port Angeles) -- Port Angeles property owners may see a new utility fee in the coming year.

Port Angeles city manager Dan McKeen said this one will be used to pay for a study of pollution in the Port Angeles harbor.

"This is a harbor sediment study surcharge," said McKeen. "It will pay for a study to see what it will take to clean up the Port Angeles harbor. The city has been identified by the Department of Ecology as a potentially liable party in that clean up effort."

McKeen said the city hopes to get some financial help from the state.

"The city does expect to receive some grants to help with financial relief for that study. If we are successful in receiving grants from the Department of Ecology, we will put the funds back into that utility to help offset future rate increases," said McKeen.
