Agreement reached on transfering murder suspect to state custody
November 6th, 2012 - 5:44am
(Port Angeles) -- Clallam County Commissioners today are expected to approve
an agreement between the Sheriff's Department and the Department of Corrections to transfer an accused double murderer out of the county jail.
The agreement would establish transfers between Clallam County and the state prison in Shelton for Darrold Stenson.
Stenson is awaiting a retrial in Clallam County in the 1993 killing of his wife and business partner at an exotic bird farm near Sequim.
The state Supreme Court tossed his conviction earlier this year and ordered a new trial.
But Stenson has health problems, and officials feel he can be
better served at the Shelton Center. He still will have to be back in Clallam County occasionally before the trial.
Sheriff Bill Benedict feels the transfer costs to the county won't be excessive.
A firm trial date has not been set yet, but officials think it may take place next spring.
