New owner for former PA ferry

(Tacoma) -- A derelict ferry that once plied the Port Angeles to Victoria run has a new owner.
But the Kalakala's future is still uncertain.
The art-deco ferry is now owned by Karl Anderson. The Tacoma businessman took possession of the rusted ferry Friday in exchange for back rent owed him by the former owner of the ferry, Steve Rodrigues.
Anderson owns the land where the Kalakala is moored in Tacoma.
Rodrigues has tried for years to find a plan for the ferry. At one point he planned to turn it into a floating tourist attraction in Port Angeles.
But the ship has been moored in Tacoma for years and the Coast Guard and state Ecology Department remain concerned the boat may sink causing pollution and blocking shipping.
Anderson tells the Tacoma News Tribune he doesn't have a specific plan for the ferry. Anderson has supported doing something with the old ferry, but claims Rodrigues has not cooperated.
Anderson says he still would like to see the Kalakala restored. However, Anderson also owns a nearby graving dock where the ship could be scrapped if necessary.
