New reservation road opens
November 20th, 2012 - 6:01am
(Port Angeles) -- A new road in and out of the Lower Elwha Reservation officially opens today.
Following a tribal ceremony, the nine-million dollar Elwha Valley Road will be open to the public.
The road provides a second road into the reservation which lies near the mouth of the Elwha River.
Previously Lower Elwha Road was the only road in or out.
But tribal officials were concerned about access for the reservation if there is flooding, an earthquake or tsunami.
The new road will connect Kacee Way to Stratton Road on the reservation.
